Day 156: Đầm Hà to Đình Lập

11 Feb 2019

As I lay in a deep slumber, Adam briskly opened the curtains wide, letting the morning rays seep into the room and drenching my eyelids. “Wakey wakey!” he called brightly. Taking no prisoners, he also switched on the light: it very clearly was time to get up! As we were leaving the hotel, Adam noticed the owner was wearing a Hull City jumper. As a staunch Hull City fan, Adam had to get a selfie with the man who had no idea why Adam was so jovial or who indeed Hull City actually are.

Day 155: Dong Xing (China) to Đầm Hà

10 Feb 2019

I type this, thoroughly tired but extremely happy after a successful first day in Vietnam! It has been a brilliant day… let me tell you all about it…

Although the alarm was set for 0600 and we knew we needed to be up and have an early start to cross the border into Vietnam, we still didn’t manically rush. I enjoyed my first Vietnamese coffee (albeit a 3 in 1 instant sachet we bought from the amazing night market at the border last night!) sat up in bed, awakening my mind and preparing myself for the day ahead.

Day 151: Nanning to Wild Camp near Datang

6 Feb 2019

Unwisely, we had a very late night last night: Adam video editing and me researching and blog writing. We also spoke to my Mum on video call for quite some time which was lovely. Rest days are also great opportunities to spend some quality time catching up with family online. I didn’t stop and try to get to sleep until 2am, Adam after 3am… Surprisingly, we were up and out of the hotel not toooooo late though. 1130 (ish) we cycled away from the hotel.

Day 146: Qianjiangzhen to Binyang

1 Feb 2019

Another lazy morning in bed this morning (there’s a running theme here!) in our dingy hotel room in the equally dingy town. We would like to be in Nanning for Chinese New Year: the city is only two days away if we take the more direct route, but as New Year is five days away, we have plenty of time. It’s nice not to rush as we know that when we get into Vietnam we will have a tight schedule with only having 15 days (we have decided to go for the 15 days visa waiver, rather than the 30 day visa. We will likely get a 30 day visa when we re-enter Vietnam from Laos). So we may have further to cycle each day with potentially fewer rest days, so it’s nice to make the most of the slower pace for now.

Day 141: Yizhou to Long River Wild Camp Spot

After another great nights sleep in a comfortable hotel, we were ready to leave the town of Yizhou. As we left the hotel, I was surprised to see it was only 0920 – that has to be some kind of record for us! Especially in China.
